Frequently Asked Questions
Can you catch Legionnaires disease from an Evaporative Cooler?
No. Circulating water is less than 2°C and no droplets are allowed to form and pass into the building.
Has anyone ever caught Legionnaires disease from an Evaporative Cooler?
There have never been any cases of Legionnaires disease attributed to a wetted media cooler. There are believed to be over 30 million installations world-wide.
How much will Evaporative Cooling reduce the temperature by?
Depending on ambient temperature, an evaporative cooler unit on a hot day in the UK would keep the temperature at or below 22°C. In hot climates maximum temperature is unlikely to exceed 24°C.
Is water-reused?
Yes. Water can be re-circulated until evaporation has concentrated the salts to scaling-point (whereupon the water is replaced) and or until the cooling is turned off and the cooler then automatically drains.
How much water and electricity does an Evaporative Cooler Use?
Approximately 20W of Electricity to run and 0.7L of water per kilowatt of cooling required.
How much would it cost to run?
25kW of cooling would cost 6p per hour of electricity and 1p of water per hour in the UK.
How much maintenance is required?
You are recommended to clean the unit every 6 months.
How long do the pads last?
Pads can last up to 5 years (depending on local air quality).
Do the pads clean the air, too?
Yes, a pas will filter-out larger particules such as dust or pollen. Insect screens are also fitted as standard.
Will I get condensation?
No, provided the design is based on a balanced ventilation scheme with appropriate controls.
Will people feel uncomfortable with the water added to the air?
No. Studies show people are comfortable with higher relative humidity where the temperature is below 25°C. A correctly designed Evaporative cooling system will keep temperatures well under this figure.
