Air Distribution

General requirements

Air distribution on duct design

Design must ensure that air is optimally distributed to achieve:

  • As low a demand on cooled air as possible (more economical)
  • Complete coverage or effective spot cooling
  • No draughts.

The trick is to ensure the pressure produced by the system as the RPM of the fan increases does not exceed the stall-point of the fan (too high a pressure at too low an RPM). Otherwise the airflow will be unstable, flow rate will drop (and the fan itself will be noisy). The key to achieving the right pressure in the system for the correct RPM lies in the duct design.

We offer plenum chamber ducts, metal ducts, "natural" dispersal via use of room cavities (like ceilings) and fabric ducts.

8-way plenum

8-way plenum chamber

This 8-way plnum chamber is a very popular distribution method for industrial and commercial premises. It allows you to distribute the cooled air as low as possible into a building (as low as 3.5m) to make as much height difference with the extraction fan to create the proper temperature stratification within the building.

Metal Ducting

metal ducting

Metal ducting can be specifically designed for the installation requirements or based on standard fittings. Spot cooling can be achieved very effectively using metal ducting terminating in swirl diffusers.

Suspended Ceilings

Suspended ceiling ducting

Where a suspended ceiling exists, then the void offers a splendid plenum chamber. Cooled air pressurises the void and diffusers are located amongst the ceiling tiles to allow the cooled air to escape over as wide an aerea as desired. Windows can be left open to allow natural evacuation and can even be fitted with limit switches to help control the air flow and the timing of the cooling operation.

Fabric Ducts

Fabric Ducta

Fabric ducting offers draught-free diffusion and is commonly used in commercial and leisure facilities.
